Under the initiative of Bhaktapur Municipality and the study team formed by the Municipality, the pilot project on institutional solid waste management has been launched on 30th of Falgun, 2078. The program kicked-off with the handing-over of waste bins by chief guest and chief of Ward number 8, Mahendra Khayamali to Principal of Khwopa Engineering College, Principal of Samaj Sudhar Secondary School and Head of Administration Section of Khwopa College of Engineering.
The Pilot Program was launched with the objective of studying and implementing sustainable Solid Waste Management Practices in the schools and colleges Bhaktapur Municipality. The focus of the Pilot Program will be the segregation of the solid waste generated at the source and thereby improving the efficient and effective handling of the wastes.
In his remarks, Chief Guest Khayamali discussed about the waste management problems faced by local governments in Kathmandu Valley and the future waste management programs of Bhaktapur Municipality. Principal of Khwopa Engineering College, Er. Sujan Maka appealed all the staffs and teachers to contribute in the success of the Pilot Program by actively participating in SWM practices. Jagannath Prajapati, Principal of Samaj Sudhar Secondary School talked about the importance of training students of younger ages in schools about eco-friendly practices for sustainable future.
SWM experts Ronish Shakya and Puna Bhaila conducted the orientation and demonstration on using bins. Altogether five types of bins are installed, consisting of bins for food waste, plastic bottles and cans, plastic wrappers and paper waste in each floor of the buildings and bin for sanitary pads in the ladies’ restrooms. Colour codes and informative displays will facilitate the users. Data will be collected as required and behavioral change among teachers, staffs and students will be observed. Finally, the feasibility of the project will be evaluated for extended implementation in Bhaktapur Municipality.
