On Monday, 12th December, first semester students of ME Earthquake Engineering visited the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Centre (NEMRC), Kathmandu as part of their Engineering Seismology course. The NEMRC under Department of Mines and Geology is the government body responsible for monitoring and analysing earthquake events in the country.
The students were welcomed to the centre by NEMRC seismologist Chintan Timsina, who explained the working of seismograph and various technologies used to detect and measure earthquakes. He demonstrated how the national seismic network work and how the data was analysed. He discussed the future plans of the centre to upgrade the technology and also the challenges faced by seismologists and the centre in disseminating correct information about earthquake to the general public. The students asked questions regarding the seismic network and methods applied to study earthquakes.
Overall, the visit to the NEMRC was a valuable learning experience for the Masters' students, who gained a deeper understanding of the complexities of earthquake research.
