Architecture students in their 7th semester recently completed an excursion to Koteshor, Kathmandu exploring it as a representative example of a spontaneous neighbourhood as part of their Neighbourhood planning studio. The visit took place on 25th Shrawan 2081 with 43 students facilitated by 4 teachers namely Prof Dr. Mohan Moorti Pant, Ar. Sunaina Karmacharya, Ar. Libas Phaiju and Ar. Rijina Bajracharya. The visit was aimed to familiarize students about residential environment of new settlement areas of Kathmandu, focusing on neighbourhood concept, structure and hierarchy of community facilities.
The excursion commenced with an introduction to history of Koteshor and an overview of current planning practices in Nepal. The teachers led the students from Koteshor junction to Seti-Opi Marga, Gyanodaya Galli, Dharmasthali Marga, Koteshor Mahadev Mandir, Sahayogi Nagar to Manohara riverfront at southwest, Bagmati riverfront at Northwest and Dovan at Western side of Koteshor.
During the visit, students focussed on streetscape, open spaces, walkability, and the housing clusters within neighbourhood. They observed how the essential elements of neighbourhood planning, as discussed in the studio, are integral to everyday lives of residents. The experience emphasized the importance of neighbourhood planning concepts in urban development practices, giving students valuable insights into their application in real-word scenarios.
